What is PRP?

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a nonsurgical procedure used for skin rejuvenation. It is mostly used on the face while it can be used on other parts of the body as well. It is called Platelet Rich Plasma because it involves the use of patients blood platelets to encourage cell rejuvenation and increased production of essential ingredients for skin to stay youthful. Besides rejuvenating skin, it improves skin texture and appearance. Truly anyone can benefit from PRP treatment.

How is it done?

The patient’s blood is drawn and then placed in apparatus for centrifuge, which separates the blood components and it that way it separates blood cells from plasma and platelets. Then plasma and platelets are injected in patient’s skin. Since there are no new ingredients being injected, there is no risk of complications. The amount of blood drawn depends on the size of the area that is being treated. The entire procedure takes around 1 hour.

Side effects

Right after the procedure many patients experience some swelling and redness. Swelling and redness resolve as soon as your platelets activate and begin the healing process. Besides swelling and redness, some patients experience minor bruising that resolves within few days.

After first treatment majority of patients notice improvements in skin texture and appearance. To achieve better results, treatment has to repeat after four weeks. In average patients reach desired results after three treatments and those results last for around 2 years. The results vary depending on the quality of patient’s blood so people who smoke and do not maintain healthy diet will not have as great results as those who don’t.

Who can’t undergo PRP treatment?

PRP is a safe treatment for the majority of people but it is not advised if you are trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding, as well for those with an autoimmune disorder, who have had cancer, or have implants in the area that they want to treat.

The cost varies and it depends on the location and expertise of the provider. It also depends on the size of the area being treated and how many treatments is required. The price ranges from $ 700 to $ 2000 per treatment.
