Why You Need Dermal Filler Injections

Dermal fillers are a safe and effective way to add volume to different areas around your face. The added volume can have a number of aesthetic benefits, depending on what you want to achieve. For older patients who have lost facial fat as a part of aging, adding volume can restore your natural fullness and give you a younger appearance while smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines.

For patients with naturally thin areas and features that don’t complement their entire facial structure, dermal fillers can subtly boost your appearance. As a result, you can either achieve plumper or fuller areas, or you can reshape areas like your jaw, chin, and nose without the need for surgical procedures like rhinoplasty.

There are several types of facial fillers. In the hands of an experienced and qualified provider, all these fillers can produce instant results that improve your appearance. The filler type you use can vary depending on what you choose, what your doctor recommends, and how long you want your fillers to last. Fillers are often made out of the following substances:

  • Hyaluronic acid – a natural substance found in your body that can help will collagen production while keeping your skin hydrated. Because hyaluronic acid is a common substance in your body, the risk of allergic reactions is much lower compared to other substances. Some HA filler brands include Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero.
  • Calcium hydroxyapatite – a natural substance commonly found in bones. This is a filler with calcium particles inside a thick and smooth gel. Radiesse is currently the only FDA-approved CaHa dermal filler.
  • Poly-L-lactic acid – a synthetic filler substance commonly used in dissolvable stitches. Aside from serving as a filler, it can stimulate collagen production to keep your skin healthy. Sculptra Aesthetic is an example of poly-l–lactic acid.
  • Polymethylmethacrylate – a biocompatible synthetic substance that has microspheres to support the skin and collagen production. Bellafill is an example of a polymethylmethacrylate dermal filler.

Increase Facial Volume

For older adults who’ve lost facial volume and younger adults who have naturally thin areas, dermal filler injections can instantly increase your facial volume and give you a fuller, younger appearance.

Smoothen Out Your Wrinkles

By increasing the volume underneath your skin, you can fill in the lines, wrinkles, and folds forming around your face. This can minimize the appearance of these lines and give you a noticeably younger appearance.

Reshape Your Contour and Nose Shape

Avoid cosmetic surgery, its risks, and the extensive recovery it requires. You can add volume to areas like your jaw, chin, lips, and nose to reshape them to your desired appearance without the need for invasive procedures.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular option for people who want to see quick, subtle, and natural-looking improvements to their facial features. Some of the benefits you can get from choosing dermal filler treatments over surgical solutions include:

Little to No Downtime and Recovery Period

Dermal fillers are a minimally invasive procedure that requires little to no downtime and recovery. After treatment, you might feel minor side effects, but these subside within a number of days. In comparison, surgical alternatives like facelifts and rhinoplasty can require weeks of recovery, which means time off. If you live a fast-paced life and have a busy schedule, dermal fillers are the faster solution.

Instant Results

Dermal fillers are injected directly underneath the outer skin layer. Once injected, you can see an instantly subtle difference in your face’s shape, though it can take up to 2 weeks for the filler to fully set. In comparison, treatments like microneedling, laser therapy, and other anti-aging treatments can take longer and multiple sessions to see visible results.

Cover More Signs of Aging

As you age, you can develop a number of aging signs. While some aesthetic treatments only focus on one or two of these aging signs, dermal fillers can be used on a number of signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, folds, scars, lip, chin, nose, and more.

Combine with Other Injectables

Dermal fillers can be safely paired with other aesthetic treatments like neurotoxin injections, microneedling, and other procedures. This is to cover more signs and causes of aging that can affect your overall appearance. Schedule your consultation to receive a custom treatment plan designed for your own beauty goals.

Our Process for Administering Dermal Fillers

Before you can receive dermal fillers, you’ll have to undergo an initial consultation with one of our aesthetic doctors. During this appointment, our doctors will discuss what dermal fillers can and can’t do for your face, what you want to achieve, if dermal fillers are the right aesthetic treatment for you, and if you’re a qualified candidate to receive certain types of dermal fillers. We can also provide you with personalized treatment plans to help you achieve your beauty goals for both your face and body.

If you’re qualified to receive dermal fillers, we can proceed with the treatment. First, we’ll apply a numbing cream to the injection sites to minimize the discomfort of the injection. Next, your provider will administer enough filler for your treatment areas. The difference is instantly noticeable and might feel a bit fuller at first, but the final results can take up to 2 weeks as the filler sets onto the area. The whole process can take less than an hour.

Am I Qualified for Dermal Fillers?

Most adults can receive dermal fillers if they are in generally good health. Keep in mind that dermal fillers are only for increasing volume, so there’s a limit to what it can do to reshape areas like your nose and jaw. So if you want to reshape your nose to make it look smaller, for example, dermal fillers can’t reshape your nose and you may require rhinoplasty from a cosmetic surgeon.

Some people may not qualify for dermal fillers if they have any of the following criteria:

  • A history of allergic reactions to certain types of dermal fillers and any of their other ingredients
  • A history of allergic reactions that resulted in difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • An allergy to lidocaine
  • Any bleeding or clotting disorder
  • Have plans to undergo cosmetic surgery or any other aesthetic procedure in the near future that can affect your fillers’ results
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

FAQs About Dermal Fillers

Q: Which dermal filler is best for me?

A: It can vary between patients and depends on factors like which area you want to treat, how much filler is needed, and which dermal filler substance is best for that area. For instance, Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite and is good for moderate to severe wrinkles, while hyaluronic acid dermal fillers like Juvederm are the better option for lip fillers. Our doctors can recommend the right filler for you during your initial consultation.

Q: How long do dermal fillers last?

A: It really depends on which dermal filler substance you use. Our doctors can recommend which one is best for you during your initial consultation. While the duration can vary between patients, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers usually wear off within 6 to 12 months, while synthetic polymethyl-methacrylate fillers can last up to 5 years.

Q: Are there any side effects from receiving dermal fillers?

A: Like other aesthetic injections, there may be some discomfort during the injection, but we can minimize the pain with topical numbing cream. Following your treatment, you might experience common side effects like mild pain, redness, bruising, and swelling on the injection site. These can subside after several days and can be treated with home remedies. Our team can provide you with aftercare guidelines to minimize these side effects.
