There are many different types of brown spots that can occur on the skin. These include freckles, solar lentigines(sunspots) and flat or raised keratosis. These all occur because of sun damage and most appear on the hands, face and neck where the skin is exposed the most to the sun. Today we focus on solar lentigines(sunspots) and the different treatments available to help diminish these spots.

Chemical peels are a great treatment option for sun spots. The winter is a perfect time to receive these treatments. The peel can reverse sun damage and also diminish fine lines and wrinkles – an added bonus! The chemical peel is a procedure where a chemical solution is applied to the skin which makes the top layer peel off and new skin is revealed underneath. Expect a 5-7 day recovery where the skin will peel and flake away. The winter is a great time for this treatment because the patient will not be in direct sunlight during the recovery.

Laser resurfacing is another option to diminish sun spots.  Fraxel skin resurfacing is offered in the salon. This procedure uses fractional laser technology that helps your skin look younger and newer. The treatment stimulates the natural healing process to generate new, smooth skin after eliminating dead skin cells. Patients typically notice results within days after treatment. Maximum results are achieved with 35 treatments spaced 46 weeks apart.

Skin Pen is also available in the spa. Skin Pen is a minimally invasive treatment performed in an office setting. The procedure stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself. The best part about this procedure – there is little to no downtime, can be used on most skin types and all parts of your body. This is a great option to help get rid of sun spots on your hands, face and arms.

Linda recently came into our office for a consultation. Linda is 47 years old and was starting to lose volume in her cheeks. This often happens as men and women age. The skin loses its fullness and may start to sag. We sat down with Linda to explain two procedures we do in the office to help with this problem area known as mid face augmentation.

The first procedure we recommend is using Restylane Lyft. Restylane Lyft is approved by the FDA for cheek augmentation and use in the mid face region for patients who are experiencing age-related contour deficiencies. It is a hyaluronic acid gel filler that provides lift to the cheeks and also smoothes nasolabial folds(laugh lines) in the mid face region.  This procedure is safe, requires no downtime and eliminates surgery.

Juvederm Voluma is the other procedure we recommend to patients.  Voluma is also a hyaluronic gel filler that is used to lift and fill out the cheeks when they start to sag. It is FDA approved and will last up to two years with optimal treatment. This procedure can be performed in an office setting and requires no downtime.

Restylane Lyft has a higher viscosity than voluma and mimics the patient’s own hyaluronic production to provide fullness in the cheeks. Lyft is also less expensive than Voluma and patients see results for eighteen months.  In the end, Linda chose Restylane Lyft and saw immediate results in her face. The filler added lift to the mid face region and smoothed out wrinkles in the area.

Botox has been used for many different medical uses. It was originally approved to treat lazy eye and eyelid spasms. Physicians noticed the botox was smoothing out the wrinkles around the eyes and after clinical trials it was approved by the FDA to treat wrinkles. Botox is now the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. Microbotox is the newest treatment approved to improve acne and skin texture.

The Microbotox technique is now being used to treat acne and improve skin texture. The Botox is diluted and injected in multiple areas in very small doses. The Botox is spread more evenly in the area treated and the chance of over treatment is less. For those who suffer from recalcitrant acne problems, the botox can be injected superficially in the skin. This slows down the production of sebum(the oily secretions that cause acne) and the patient sees a dramatic improvement in their acne. Ongoing treatments are recommended to keep the acne from returning.

Microbotox is also used to improve skin texture. Many people do not like the “frozen” look that comes from using too much Botox in certain areas of the face. By using the microbotox technique, the skin texture is smoothed using less botox.

Double Chin, waddle, jowls or turkey neck…if you have extra fat under your chin you may have heard  some of these names for that dreaded double chin. Now you can freeze that fat away with Coolsculpting!

Coolsculpting is the non surgical treatment option for fat reduction and body contouring to treat diet and exercise resistant fat. The Cryolipolysis procedure used in Coolsculpting uses controlled cooling to eliminate fat cells by essentially freezing them to death. The treatment targets the fat cells under the skin while leaving everything else around the fat untouched. Patients see results within 12 weeks of the procedure. Treatments are very comfortable in an office like setting and require no downtime. We have patients come in on their lunch hour!

Until recently, the only option for treating the double chin was liposuction. Liposuction is invasive, requires downtime, bruising and follow up appointments. Now the FDA has approved a new mini handpiece called the CoolMini used for Coolsculpting in small areas such as under the chin. The CoolMini can reduce on average 20% of fat and requires no needles.
