Botox reapplication after injection wears off

What Happens When Botox Wears Off?

Book now

Many patients see fantastic results after their Botox Cosmetic injections. The relaxed muscles create a smoother skin, diminishing lines and wrinkles around the site of injection.

But what happens when Botox wears off? After six to nine months you’ll start to see lines and wrinkles reappear. There’s a myth that repeated use of Botox can actually make wrinkles worse, but that is not the case! Typically the patient has become used to the smoother, younger looking appearance that they’ve had, so as the wrinkles reappear slowly, they only think they are worse.

Why Do Wrinkles Reappear?

Botox works by paralyzing the nerve endings that attach to the muscles, causing the muscle to enter a prolonged relaxed state. Over time, new nerve endings are formed that were unaffected by Botox. When these new nerve endings reattach to the muscle, the muscle will be able to contract again, causing fine lines and wrinkles.

What happens to the toxins?

While large doses of Botulinum toxin are highly toxic, the dosage used during a Botox Cosmetic procedure is so small as to not to be dangerous. In fact, over the years, Botox has been found to be very well tolerated by the body.

In fact, Botox has other medical uses, where the dosage is orders of magnitude larger than those acceptable for cosmetic procedure. Even then, the body has proven well suited to tolerate it. However, it’s important to make sure your provider is a licensed experienced, medical professional, and that they are using “real” Botox Cosmetic, which is regulated and monitored. Don’t take a chance with unregulated “knock-offs”, especially when dealing with something injectable into your skin!
