What Are BOTOX® Injections?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a protein, prepared from the bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum, which inhibits muscle activity by blocking transmission from the nerve to the muscle. Botox® Cosmetic is a large uniform molecular structure, 900–kD size, with protective accessory proteins. It is FDA approved for the treatment of the lines that form between the eyebrows, frown lines around the mouth, and crow’s feet, which exist around the eyes. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used for decades for cosmetic procedures and is one of the most common, minimally invasive procedures performed today.
What BOTOX® Cosmetic Does
BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered to reduce dynamic wrinkles, which form from the movement of the muscles that show expression. Over time, dynamic wrinkles may become static, etched in, or visible without any movement of facial muscles. Other contributing factors, such as cigarette smoking and sun exposure, can worsen the appearance of these lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic is used for relaxation of the muscles, smoothing out wrinkles on the forehead, crow’s feet, lower face, and neck.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is supplied in a vial of 100 units that the injector must dilute with saline. The number of units of BOTOX® injected will depend on the dilution and injected volume. At Ethos Spa, we use a concentrated dilution to mitigate spreading from overly dilute preparations.
For over 16 years, BOTOX® Cosmetic (botulinum toxin type A) has also been used to treat a variety of medical conditions, such as migraines, muscles spasms, and swallowing disorders. It is now approved in more than 75 countries and BOTOX® Therapeutic remains one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.
How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works
Lines and wrinkles naturally form over time on the face and body. Movement of the facial muscles causes the skin to crease. Skin becomes less elastic as we age and repeated movement causes permanent lines and wrinkles to develop.
With a few tiny injections, BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that causes muscles to contract. With less muscle movement, the skin surface gradually smooths out and the lines begin to fade. A 2005 survey found that most patients were satisfied with the results of their BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments. Approved by the FDA in 2002, BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular of all physician-administered cosmetic procedures, surgical and nonsurgical combined.
Am I a Candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is approved by the FDA for treating moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles in patients 18 to 65 years of age. Individuals who wish to erase crow’s feet, which exist around the eyes and glabellar lines, which are between the brows, would likely benefit from BOTOX® injections. It can also be used to reduce dynamic lines on almost any other part of the body as well. BOTOX® Cosmetic is not right for everyone. People who are hypersensitive to any of the injectable solution’s components, including albumin, should not use BOTOX® Cosmetic. It should not be injected at any site where there is an active infection. Caution should be exercised in patients with existing neuromuscular problems such as myasthenia gravis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Lambert–Eaton syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. BOTOX® Cosmetic should also be avoided in pregnant and nursing women, and is not recommended for those over the age of 65.
