BOTOX® Treatment Procedure

BOTOX® is administered during a simple, 5 to 10 minute procedure, in which tiny injections are applied to each specific treatment area. No anesthesia is required; however, a cold pack or topical anesthetic cream may be used. During the procedure, minimal discomfort is experienced, and is typically very brief. One of the many benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic is that no downtime or recovery time is required after treatment. You can walk out the door of either of our serene New Jersey spas confident that the BOTOX® treatment will provide your desired results.

Your BOTOX® Specialist

BOTOX® Cosmetic should be administered by a properly trained healthcare physician who has received appropriate training. It is important that the injector understand the pharmacology of BOTOX® Cosmetic as well as anatomy to minimize complications. The client should also be aware that the BOTOX® Cosmetic being used is obtained from the United States and has been manufactured by Allergan, a leading healthcare company. The informed consumer should also ask about the number of units that are injected and the location.

BOTOX® Treatment Dosages

The number of units required for treatment depends on the area that is injected.

  • Glabellar lines, which are between the eyebrows, typically require 20 to 40 units.
  • The forehead requires 10 to 20 units.
  • Crow’s feet typically require 15 to 20 units.

BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be injected around the lips for vertical lines, in the chin, to treat pebbly appearance or a downturned frown, as well as the horizontal bands which form in the neck.

How Long Are the Effects Visible?

Patients typically see results within days, and continue to see improvements during the first week after treatment. The effects of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment last an average of 3 months. Some clients find that repeated use of BOTOX® Cosmetic causes muscular atrophy, resulting in fewer units of BOTOX® Cosmetic required at a time, and longer time periods in between injections.
In clinical studies, the majority of people (82.5%) reported an improvement in the lines between their brows after a week. The majority (89%) of men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their appearance of brow lines as moderate or better after 1 month. Though extremely rare, some people may be non-responders, and see no results at all.

Side Effects and Risks of BOTOX® Injections

BOTOX® injections will not make patients look like they’ve had cosmetic work done, and you will still be able to frown, smile, or look surprised, just without the wrinkles and creases appearing.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is considered a safe treatment. At Ethos Spa, we have had no reported instances of serious side effects occurring in patients. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, some risks or side effects are possible, which may include:

  • Localized pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Erythema
  • Bleeding/bruising
  • Temporary redness or infection at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Nausea and flu like symptoms

The most common reported adverse effect is lid ptosis, or droopy eyelid, which is temporary and resolved within 4 to 6 weeks. This occurs in about 5% of patients and results from the spread of BOTOX® to adjacent muscles in the eyelid.
The most common adverse effects following injection include blepharoptosis and nausea. There have been rare reports of adverse effects involving the cardiovascular system. Serious and/or immediate hypersensitivity reactions have rarely been reported. These reactions include anaphylaxis, urticaria, soft-tissue edema, and dyspnea. Other serious side effects of BOTOX® Therapeutic treatments have also been reported, such as double vision, difficulty swallowing, and breathing. It is important to seek immediate medical attention should you develop any of the more serious side effects.
