How Acne Treatments Work
Unlike over-the-counter acne medication, the acne treatment options provided at our New Jersey spa actually target and attack the factors that cause acne. Treatments can improve skin condition by reducing sebum production; speeding the growth of new skin cells; removing dead skin cells; and fighting bacterial infection. Some treatments, combining several therapies, achieve two or three of these benefits simultaneously, improving their efficacy.
Types of Acne Treatment
Laser and light therapy
Laser treatments have proven to be more effective in reducing acne than any prescription or over the counter medications. Laser- and light-based therapies can reach deep layers of skin without harming the skin’s surface. Some laser systems are thought to compromise sebaceous glands, decreasing their oil production. Other laser and light therapies target the bacterium that causes acne inflammation. These therapies also improve skin texture and lessen scarring. Several types of lasers have been found effective for treating acne and for treating acne scars as well, including:
Blue Light Therapy: Low-intensity blue light source is believed to destroy P. acnes, the bacterium that plays a role in the development of acne. Possible side effects of blue light therapy include temporary redness and dryness in the treated areas. When Blue Light Therapy is combined with newer red light therapy, its effectiveness is enhanced.
Pulsed Light and Heat Energy Therapy: Pulsed light combined with heat energy destroys P. acnes bacterium and shrinks sebaceous glands, which then decreases sebum production. The laser light kills the bacteria while radio frequency energy tightens the skin through its heat. The laser also adds to the overall effect in healing and cosmetic enhancement. Side effects of this therapy may include temporary redness in the treated areas.
Diode Laser Treatment: Diode lasers can destroy sebaceous glands in the dermis, the thick middle layer of skin, without harming the outer layer of skin. Side effects of diode laser treatment can include temporary redness and swelling of the treated areas.
Cosmetic procedures
Cosmetic procedures, which are designed for reversing signs of aging, such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion, have also been proven effective in helping control acne.
Chemical peels: Mild chemicals applied to skin in this procedure can help remove dead skin cells, clear blocked pores, and remove whiteheads and blackheads, as well as generate the growth of new skin. Chemical peels are often used in conjunction with acne creams or gels, as the peels facilitate better absorption of topical medications.
Microdermabrasion: The process of exfoliating dead and damaged skin can unclog pores, and hence assist in the treatment of acne. Microdermabrasion is often recommended in conjunction with other topical acne treatments, as the effectiveness of these topical medications increases on abraded skin.
