What is TMJ and how is it treated?

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint is injured or damaged, it can lead to a localized pain disorder called temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome. Common symptoms of Temporomandibular joint dysfunction disorders include: Pain or tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak or open your mouth wide. Sufferers also have limited ability to open the mouth very wide. There are many different treatment options available to correct this syndrome.

TMJ syndrome often responds to home remedies, including ice packs to the joint, over-the-counter non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), avoiding chewing gum, massage or gentle stretches of the jaw and neck, and stress reduction.Sometimes medical treatment is necessary and includes dental splints, Botox injections, physical therapy, prescription medications, and in severe cases, surgery.

Botox injections can be used as an alternative treatment for TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) disorders and associated jaw tension and pain. When injected into facial muscles afflicted with soreness, BOTOX can relieve TMJ and jaw tension for many patients. The injections often eliminate headaches resulting from teeth grinding, and, in cases of severe stress, BOTOX can even minimize lock jaw. Although BOTOX treatment for these conditions is presently experimental; evidence indicates that it can be extremely effective. BOTOX relieves jaw tension by making muscles unable to engage in the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain.

Cellfina™ – FDA Approved Cellulite Treatment for the Thighs and Buttocks

The wait is over! Introducing the only FDA-cleared, minimally invasive, one-time procedure that is clinically proven to treat the primary structural cause of cellulite for long-lasting results. Allure Magazine named Cellfina™ a 2015 Beauty Breakthrough Award winner.

How Does It Work?

The Cellfina™ System is clinically proven to improve the appearance of cellulite for at least two years—the longest FDA-cleared duration for a cellulite treatment. Performed in a doctors office by a qualified physician, Cellfina™ treats the primary structural cause of cellulite for a smooth and healthy look that gives patients the confidence to wear skirts and shorts again.  The Cellfina™ System treats the primary structural cause of cellulite—the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and buttocks. These tight bands pull down the skin, creating the puckering you see on the surface of the skin. Similar to a rubber band under tension, once released, the treated skin bounces back to smooth itself out in as little as three days.

Where Can I Get Treatment?

The treatment typically takes less than an hour and is performed in our office.  First, cellulite dimples are marked. Then Dr. Soni delivers a local numbing agent followed by the treatment itself. Afterward patients are able to go about their day, but may want to take it easy for up to 24 hours. Results are visible in as little as three days and those results are still evident two years after treatment.

Scientists have been working in using stem cells to cure disease, decrease baldness, help alzheimer’s patients and also the benefts to skin care. Stem cells come in many forms, embryonic, fetal and adult stem cell harvesting are a few that are used most frequently. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC’s) are one type; they form a key part of the human body’s defense against injury and stress. These have been used in skin care research to lessen the signs of aging.

When you hear about products that contain stem cells, you should ask several questions. First, you should research the particular stem cell that is being advertised(such as plant stem cells – hint, they do not work). Some creams have nothing to do with stem cells whatsoever except using it as a deceitful marketing term (e.g. Biologic’s Stem Cell Cream). You can filter these out right away. That only leaves human stem cells.  There are not any  cosmoceutical products on the market that contain human stem cells. That would be considered  “biologic” by FDA standards, and would be regulated like a drug or device. The reason is that whole cells contain (other people’s) DNA, and may also carry disease.  For this reason, we do not recommend any skin care using stem cells. There is just not enough research that has been done to show they work and most importantly, they have not been FDA approved.

We have many other FDA approved treatments available in our office to eliminate the signs of aging. We offer Botox, dermal fillers, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and many skin care products. Give us a call today and we can help you with your skin care regime.

As we age, our face loses volume and starts to sag. Many of us start looking for solutions to get our youthful appearance back in our face without surgery. Face lifts are a solution, but they are expensive and require downtime. We are excited to bring an alternative to you that you may have already used for your smile lines, Restylane Lyft! Restylane Lyft is now FDA approved for cheek augmentation.

Restylane Lyft has been previously used to treat  moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines). Now it is approved for cheek augmentation and the correction of age-related midface contour deficiencies in patients over the age of 21. This filler was formally known as Perlane-L and is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel used to correct volume loss and treat wrinkles in the face. Through nonsurgical injections, Restylane Lyft is specifically designed to add fullness to the cheeks and midface area, which can result in a more natural-looking, youthful appearance.

These before and after photos of actual patients will show you results that cannot be achieved by any over the counter products. Give us a call for your complimentary consultation in New Jersey.

We recently gave you a list of the top 4 skin care products everyone needs at home. We found one more to add to the list – niacinamide! Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that forms when the body absorbs more niacin than it actually needs. We can find this chemical in many foods that we eat including green vegetables, beans, whole wheat, barley, fish, eggs, and meat. Niacin is important to the human body for many reasons. It protects your heart by reducing the amount of bad cholesterol in your body. It also prevents the collection of plaque in the arteries of the heart. The body uses this chemical compound to process carbohydrates into energy or into fats, and is responsible for maintaining proper blood sugar levels. The digestive system, brain, and nervous system would not be able to function without sufficient amounts of this compound.

How does this relate to skin care? Niacin creams have been shown to improve the skin’s elasticity and appearance. They have also been used to treat acne and rosacea by reducing the inflammation of the skin. The creams are also used to help sunscreen work better by blocking free radicals. It is great to help with anti-aging – who doesn’t want that?

Depression is a common but serious mood disorder. There are many forms of depression and it affects people differently. Treatments may include prescription medication, talking to a therapist and support groups. We recently have been introduced to a study that shows that Botox injections may reduce symptoms of depression. Can Botox treat depression? Read on to find out more.

Botox is commonly used to treat facial lines and wrinkles. Now, some doctors are injecting Botox into the face to treat depression. The theory is that our emotions are expressed by facial muscles, which in turn send feedback signals to the brain to reinforce those emotions. Treating facial muscles with Botox interrupts this cycle.  Positive effects on mood have been seen in patients who’ve had Botox treatment for the frown lines in the area above the nose and between the eyebrows.

Clinical trials have revealed that patients treated with Botox over a placebo showed a 47% reduction in depression after 6 weeks compared to only a 9.25% reduction in the placebo group. A majority of the patient’s who saw a reduction in symptoms were put into remission and were unlikely to suffer from depression again. Give us a call to discuss Botox treatments for your depression today.

We often receive calls from patients who have had fillers under their eyes and report having a blue discoloration under the skin where the filler was injected. This discoloration is called the “Tyndall effect”. The Tyndall effect happens when the filler is placed superficially under the eye. This does not happen with every patient, but it is common because of the result of light scattering from a small optical cavity created when the hyaluronic acid filler reflects light through thin skin. It appears as a bluish bump or flat area and can be resolved by dissolving some or all of the filler product with Hylenex.

Belotero is the best dermal filler to use under the eyes and in the tear trough area. It can be used superficially without causing a bluish tint under the thin skin around the eyes. Belotero is an injectable dermal filler that is used to smooth out etched in wrinkles in the face. Upon injection, it immediately integrates evenly into the face. There is little to no downtime and results are typically seen right away. Results typically last six months, but may last longer in some patients.

Are you ready to fill in your tear troughs with Belotero? Give us a call today to schedule your appointment.
